I always admire people who can decorate a room with an ethnic feel without it ending up looking like an Oxfam shop window. If you go on holiday to somewhere far off and exotic, there is always a temptation to return with a suitcase full of local crafts but turning that into a pleasing look for your room is not always easily done. Sometimes I think the trick is ‘less is more’ and also in keeping the items grouped rather than dotted around the house.

Bedrooms are an ideal place to display ethnic arts and crafts as the items in question often hold sentimental value and are personal to whoever owns them. It is a good way to remember the places you have visited and to recall happy memories. Bedroom furniture is quite often wooden which is simple to co-ordinate with hand made items, especially if they are made from natural materials as well. Think about unusual ways to display your treasures – perhaps framed, laid flat or on a wall or shelf in order to show them to their best advantage.

If you have returned from your travels with fabric items then maybe you can drape them on double beds, use them as a throw on an occasional chair or even sew them into curtains or an unusual screen. Items of clothing are best left out of the wardrobe too as you are unlikely to wear them – frame or display on a decorative coat hanger to bring the ethnic look to life in your room. Team bigger pieces with smaller ornaments to see the look through and it will all come together nicely.

The key to getting the ethnic look right is to let the individual pieces speak for themselves. Keep the rest of the interior scheme to a simple backdrop and you won’t go far wrong.
