Many parents today find that their children are living at home longer and longer. They even go off to university or college for three years and then come back! Of course, overinflated house prices are the main reason for this – young people simply can’t afford to buy their first house or flat, so it makes sense to stay on with their parents for longer.

However, there has to be a limit to how long you all want to live in the same house. Apart from anything else, it restricts your children’s ability to move on in life, and become fully independent. It’s a bit difficult for them to have people over and entertain, and they’ll never get a true grip on real life if Mum’s cooking for them and doing their washing. And as for you and your partner, you don’t get much time to yourselves.

So, if you think your child needs a little push to leave the family nest, why not help them set up their first home. This doesn’t mean buying them a place – but maybe you are in a position where you could help them out with a deposit if they want to get a mortgage. Even if they’re not ready for that level of commitment, you could offer to help them furnish a rented flat.

It’s easy enough to pick up a perfectly reasonable cheap dining table and chairs from any number of furniture stores. You can also get sofas at really good prices – and not just the basic ones. Even recliners have come down a lot in price recently, mainly because there is such a wealth of choice out there and retailers have to compete with each other so hard to secure sales.

The relatively cheap price of kitting out a flat will give you and your child great benefit. They’ll have that all-important space to themselves – and so will you!
