If you’re lucky enough to be the owner of a property with sash windows, you will know they really are a thing of beauty. This can often make it hard to decide whether you want to replace them with newer, more up to date windows, especially if the sash windows that you have installed are quite old.

It can be hard to ignore the perks that modern windows can offer. Even though some changes are small, they can make the biggest difference to your home. If you’re trying to decide whether to replace your sash windows with PVC ones, there are some strong arguments why you should. Just because you’re updating the windows material doesn’t mean you have to compromise on style and there are even options to have existing wooden sash windows refurbished or improved to bring the benefits of modern window design to this traditional style choice.

Draughty

One problem with old windows is that they can be very draughty. Sometimes they don’t fit in the frames snugly and older glass is likely to be single glazed which is not particularly efficient when it comes to heat retention.

This can be one of the main reasons why owners of sash windows feel they may need to replace them. PVC fit window frames perfectly and tend to be double glazed but wooden windows can still be fairly good insulators. Combining this with double glazed glass and secure locking mechanisms can instantly transform your home and make it more eco-friendly. After all, the more heat you keep in, the less you’ll need to turn your heating up and the more you’ll save on energy bills.

Noisy

Noise disturbance is another common reason for reviewing your windows. Single glazing glass panes are not as effective as keeping noise out as double glazing so updating your sash windows could produce a more peaceful home environment.

Choosing to replace sash windows with more modern options may not always be the right choice for your home but there are compromises which can be made to improve your home. Upgrading to double glazing allows you to retain the traditional appearance and style of sash windows without putting up with their drawbacks. Instead, you get the best of both worlds – an efficient window design that matches the style of your property.
