I am a bit of a neat freak and if anything in the house gets a mark on it or worse still, gets broken, I am the first to be itching to do something about it. The thought of actually purchasing distressed items has never sat comfortably with me, but fresh from a trip to France and inspired by country farmhouse style I am determined to give it a go.

Shabby chic is very much at home in the bedroom, as the softness and romance of this decorating style lends itself to a calm relaxing environment. Bedroom furniture does not have to be distressed – thank goodness! – white or pastel painted wood, stripped back pine or even a brass bedstead will work just as well. Linens are a key element, with the emphasis on a miss-match of fabrics and patterns and a real eye for detail. Go for appliquéd or embroidered embellishments, lace edgings and a good helping of flowers and bows.

Bedroom furniture is just the start as well. Pull out all the stops with your accessories and make sure the pictures and ornaments you choose fit the style really well and bring the whole look together. Pale, plain wall coverings and ideally white flooring will evoke the right mood and give a perfect backdrop in which to present your treasures. I intend to thoroughly enjoy the sourcing process and turn the project into a labour of love which will no doubt be added to for years to come.

Deceptively simple, shabby chic is in essence vintage and antique, but faking it is absolutely acceptable. Not just one for the ladies, shabby chic style will work for everyone with subtle tweaks and has generally wide appeal. If like me you are a reluctant convert just give it a go and see how you feel – maybe the spare room is a safe place to start!
