Decorating is lots of fun. Collecting wallpaper samples, eyeing up curtains and duvet sets, bringing home little paint swatches and then putting the whole lot together in something resembling a plan. It’s all good fun, and if you have a blank canvas to start with then it is even easier – however most of the time there will be certain existing elements which need to be incorporated into your design.

hardwood flooring

Other things to consider as you make decisions is whether you need to match your hardwood doors to your floors. New interior doors smarten up many homes, but they need to tone or contrast properly with any existing wood in order for your choice to be a success. Keep an eye on the overall look and feel as well – too much of one kind of wood in a room will be overpowering so consider not just the floor and doors but any wooden furniture too.

In many cases it is furniture which remains central to the scheme for a room, and depending on the style and colour of it you will have to make sure your other ideas aren’t at odds. Flooring is often a constant too, as replacing hardwood flooring or carpet over a large area can be a costly business and one best avoided if the current flooring is in good condition. Luckily with a wood floor you have a fairly neutral starting point which will not dictate what you do elsewhere in the room but with carpet – unless it is cream or beige – you may have to be more careful.

Before you finalise any purchases do your best to build up as close a picture as possible of what the finished room will look like. This way you can make any changes without spending any money and you are more likely to be pleased with the results.
