Whether you have people to stay often once in a blue moon or every other week, it’s always nice to have a beautiful guest room ready and prepared for them.

Now in theory that’s ok, but if you don’t have regular guests, then the guest room can quickly go downhill and become the junk room, as piles of ironing and last season’s clothes build up in there. It can soon get to the stage that there’s so much stuff in the guest room that it would take you a good few hours to clear it for anyone to be able to sleep in there.

The answer is to give your guest room a makeover. This works at two levels, it helps you sort the room out into a semblance of order so that you can do the makeover, and by making it a perfect room ready to accept a guest at a moment’s notice, you’ll be more encouraged to keep it that way.

Of course, most guests only come for a night or two, so you will have the potential to use the extra storage space in the room for your own things. But when you’re choosing new furniture for the room, think strategically about what cupboard space you’ll be using year round, and what you’ll leave free for when a guest comes to stay.

It’s a good idea to choose a furniture theme for your guest room, as it helps to give the room an elegant look. Oak furniture is a great choice as it has a timeless appeal to it, and will suit the taste of pretty much any visitor, young or old. There are some beautiful discount oak beds for sale at http://www.furnishinghomes.co.uk and you could get matching bedside tables and a wardrobe at the same time.

Once you’ve repainted the walls and put in the new furniture – and, of course, got rid of all your junk – you can finish the look with some fresh new curtains and bed linen, ending up with a guest room that people will love staying in.
